Who Cares If It’s True?
How a Decline in Trust is Changing American Journalism
TUESDAY, JUNE 26
6:30PM WINE RECEPTION
7:00PM DISCUSSION
$10 for members; $15 for guests
The rebellion against journalism, like the uprising against politicians, academia and many other elite authorities, began well before Donald Trump decided to try his hand at politics. A deeply unsettled economy and a wave of technological and social change have contributed to a populist surge in many aspects of American life, and journalists are just beginning to confront the culture of disbelief that is disrupting the only connection they have to their audience – trust. Join Marc Fisher, author of The Post’s biography of Trump, “Trump Revealed,” for a discussion of how journalism is, and isn’t, adapting to Americans’ changing needs for information and understanding in a volatile time.
Marc Fisher is a senior editor at The Washington Post, where he reports and leads coverage of foreign, national and local issues. His reporting in recent years has taken him from the Arab Spring revolutions to the presidential campaign trail. In 2016, he co-authored a biography of Donald Trump, “Trump Revealed: An American Journey of Ambition, Ego, Money, and Power”, which was a New York Times bestseller.
He has won two Pulitzer Prizes for his reporting in the past four years – the Public Service award in 2014 for his stories on government surveillance of Americans, as part of The Post’s coverage of the Edward Snowden case; and the National Reporting award in 2016 for his articles on police shootings.
