Tigers At The Gate: Is Northeast Asia Inevitably Headed for Conflict?

February 20, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Date: Tuesday, February 20
Wine Reception: 6:30PM
Lecture: 7:00PM
Cost: Free for members; $15 for guests.

Evans Revere, a former senior U.S. diplomat and leading expert on Northeast Asia, will guide us through the challenges and opportunities presented by North Korea and Northeast Asia’s past, present and future. While a nuclear-armed and belligerent North Korea seems determined to make peace in Northeast Asia unsustainable, other tensions and rivalries are coming to the forefront in Northeast Asia and the surrounding regions. As the United States turns inward, China is ascendant as a leader in trade and clean technology. Japan is emerging from decades of stagnation and is reassessing its security needs as it faces Beijing and North Korea. South Korea is questioning U.S. policy towards North Korea and trying to “balance” its ties with both China and the United States. Is Northeast Asia headed for chaos?  What role can, should, and must the U.S. play?
Evans Revere is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Center for East Asia Policy Studies. He is also a senior advisor with the Albright Stonebridge Group, a leading global strategy firm, where he advises U.S. clients with a special focus on Korea, Japan, and China.
