May 17 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Friday, May 17th
Location: Private Studio in Long Island City /Astoria
Free for Members: $15 for guests
Join members of the Club for a private tour of the Long Island City studio of world-renowned sculptor, Don Gummer. His solo and group shows have graced some of the most famous galleries in the world, and his work has spanned 5 decades.
Don Gummer began his career concentrating on table-top and wall-mounted sculpture, but in the mid-1980s, he shifted his focus to large free-standing works, often in bronze. In the 1990s, he explored a variety of other materials, such as stainless steel, aluminum and stained glass. His sculptures, while abstract, are beautifully composed and often highly structural. His interest in large outdoor works also led him to an interest in public art. His numerous public pieces appear in collections belonging to the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio, a number of corporations in NY, museums in Denmark, and a hospital in Hiroshima, among others. His extensive collection of privately commissioned work can be found all over the world.
Mr. Gummer studied at the Herron School of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He holds a B.F.A as well as an M.F.A. from the Yale School of the Arts. He has received awards from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and the American Academy in Rome, among others.
While guests are welcome, please note that space is extremely limited and priority will be given to Princeton Club members. There will be a small reception following the tour.
