Take a historical journey back in time to the height of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century with Katherine Nouri Hughes and her latest book, The Mapmaker’s Daughter. The book, a historical novel based on the life of the Queen Mother of the Ottoman Sultan, begins with Nurbanu narrating her extraordinary life starting as an illegitimate Venetian orphan and how she became the most powerful woman under the rule of the Magnificent Sultan Suleiman.

Katherine Nouri Hughes, Iraqi-Irish by birth, attended Princeton University where she received a Master’s Degree in Near Eastern Studies and serves on the department’s advisory council. She has published two books on k-12 education, was a communications executive in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, and serves on the boards of the American University in Cairo, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and WNET/13, the public television station.
