China’s fascinating and turbulent modern history is often overshadowed by its three decades of unprecedented growth. At the beginning of market reforms in 1978, China was an impoverished backwater, struggling to escape the political turmoil and economic mismanagement of the Maoist era.Today, China is the world’s second biggest economy. Yet China’s stunning transformation is as much a political one as it is economic, one in which the ruling Communist Party has long sought to secure its legitimacy after the Cultural Revolution and subsequent crises of ideological belief. How will this much-vaunted “China Model” hold up amidst the mounting trade war between Beijing and Washington and what will it mean for global trade, the environment, and ultimately, the Chinese people?
Kelly Wen is a professor of economics at Pace University where she teaches econometrics and the economic development of China. China. Her teachings explore a broad range of topics including international trade, China’s real estate bubble, as well as current Chinese law and politics. She has been featured on exclusive interviews with ABC, NBC and CNN.
