Entertainer of the Century: Bob Hope

March 20, 2017 @ 6:30 am - 9:00 pm

Date: Monday, March 20
Wine Reception: 6:30PM
Lecture: 7:00PM
Cost: Free for members; $15 for guests

Spend the evening with journalist Richard Zoglin and learn about the legendary Bob Hope. Richard Zoglin, author of Hope: Entertainer of a Century, will bring alive the story of the star who redefined what being famous meant. Hope was a savvy businessman and enterprising builder of his own brand. In addition, Hope was a public-spirited entertainer whose Christmas military tours and unflagging work for charity set the standard for public service in Hollywood. Zoglin will discuss Hope’s most public and private moments from his secret first marriage and his stint in reform school, to his indiscriminate womanizing and his ambivalent relationships with Bing Crosby and Johnny Carson.

Richard Zoglin is a contributing editor and theater critic for Time magazine. His book Comedy at the Edge: How Stand-up in the 1970s Changed America is considered the definitive history of that seminal era in stand-up comedy. After joining Time as a staff writer in 1983, Zoglin served as the magazine’s  television critic for more than a decade — reviewing hundreds of TV shows, examining media coverage of such news events as the first Gulf War, and writing cover stories on David Letterman, Bill Cosby, Diane Sawyer, Arsenio Hall and Star Trek, among others. He later became a senior editor and assistant managing editor for both the magazine and its website, Time.com. Zoglin graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B. A. in English, and an M.A. in Journalism.
