In December, Christie’s will be auctioning Albert Einstein’s celebrated “God Letter.” Addressed to the philosopher, Eric Gutkind, the letter fuses Einstein’s thoughts on religion, his Jewish identity and his own search for meaning in life. It is considered one of the definitive statements in the religion versus science debate and is one of the most famous Einstein letters extant. To coincide with its sale, the Princeton Club in conjunction with Christie’s will host a viewing of the letter and a panel of speakers featuring Einstein biographer Walter Isaacson, philosopher Rebecca Newberger Goldstein and Christie’s senior specialist Peter Klarnet.

Walter Isaacson, University Professor of History at Tulane, has been CEO of the Aspen Institute, Chairman of CNN and Editor of Time magazine. He is the author of several biographies including  Leonardo da Vinci, Steve Jobs, Einstein: His Life and Universe, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life and Kissinger: A BiographyIsaacson is a graduate of Harvard College and Pembroke College of Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is also Chair Emeritus of Teach for America, which recruits recent college graduates to teach in under-served communities.

Rebecca Newberger Goldstein is a philosopher and novelist. Her award-winning study of the philosopher Baruch Spinoza has brought the 17th century figure right into the middle of the heated contemporary debate concerning science and religion. In addition to having received the MacArthur Prize, popularly known as the “genius” award, Goldstein has received the Free-Thought Heroine by the Freedom from the Religion Foundation and the Richard Dawkins Award from the Atheist Alliance of America. She graduated from Barnard College and earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Princeton.

Peter Klarnet is the Senior Specialist for Americana, Books and Manuscripts at Christie’s. Founded in London in 1766 by James Christie, Christie’s has conducted the most celebrated auctions worldwide in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewelry, photographs, collectibles and wine.

Isaacson’s book on Einstein will be available for purchase at this event.
