Winter Wishes Gift Drive & Wrapping Party

Title: Winter Wishes Gift Drive & Wrapping Party
Location: Williams Club
Description: Children all over the city eagerly await the holiday season. It’s a great time to celebrate with friends and family, and of course, to get gifts. Unfortunately, many families in New York simply can’t afford holiday gifts. This year, the Williams Club will be showing some holiday generosity by teaming up with New York Cares as part of their yearly “Winter Wishes” gift drive. New York Cares hopes that the drive will bring gifts to over 35,000 needy children and teens by collecting their holiday gift requests, and then distributing these requests to volunteers who have pledged to do their part by purchasing, wrapping, and returning the gift.

This year the Club will receive a total of 35 winter wish requests, and we hope to have each one of these requests fulfilled by the Holiday Season. Club members who would like to volunteer will receive a gift request from a needy child or teen. Once all of our participants have gotten their gifts, they will be invited to a special gift wrapping party on December 8, featuring holiday music as well as free light holiday fare & festive libations. Don’t miss this wonderful chance to share holiday joy with someone less privileged, & let’s hit our goal of fulfilling 35 winter wishes! Free for volunteers (includes complimentary food & drink).

Volunteers can submit their pledge to Joe Mastracchio at joemastracchio.3@gmail.com

Senior Moments: Getting Old & Staying Happy

Title: Senior Moments: Getting Old & Staying Happy
Description: Senior Moments: Getting Old & Staying Happy
with Willard Spiegelman, Williams ’66

Date: Tuesday, November 29
Wine Reception: 6:30PM
Lecture: 7:00PM
Cost: Free for Club members; $15 for guests

Drawing on more than six decades’ worth of lessons from his storied career as a writer and professor, Willard Spiegelman reflects with candid humor and sophistication on growing old in his new book Senior Moments: Looking Back, Looking Ahead. Spiegelman’s expertly crafted book considers, with wisdom and elegance, how to be alert to the joys that brim from unexpected places even as death draws near. Senior Moments is a foray into the felicity and follies that age brings; a consideration of how and what one reads or rereads in late adulthood; and the eagerness for, and disappointment in, long-awaited reunions at which the past comes alive in the present.

Dr. Willard Spiegelman ’66 is a Duwain E. Hughes Jr. Distinguished Professor of English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He earned his A.B. degree from Williams College magna cum laude with highest honors in English. He did graduate work at Harvard, where he held Woodrow Wilson and Danforth fellowships, and earned an A.M. and a Ph.D.

The Princeton Club of New York and the Williams Club proudly co-sponsor this event.

Foundation Ambassador Series: Global Refugee Crisis

Title: Foundation Ambassador Series: Global Refugee Crisis
Description: Date: Wednesday, October 19
Time: 6:00 pm
Cost: Free for members, $15 for guests

The current refugee crisis is the worst in modern history, worse even than that provoked by the Second World War, with a total of 65 million people uprooted. This is due to an accumulation of national crises throughout the world: in the past six years, at least 15 conflicts have begun or reignite, while old crises in Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Colombia continue. These conflicts cause global and local displacement of populations of people.

On September 19 the United Nations General Assembly hosted a high-level summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach. On September 20, President Obama hosted the Leaders’ Summit on Refugees which will appeal to governments to pledge significant new commitments on refugees.

This is the first time the General Assembly has called for a summit at the Heads of State and Government level on large movements of refugees and migrants. This is a historic opportunity to come up with a blueprint for a better international response. It is a watershed moment to strengthen governance of international migration and a unique opportunity for creating a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants.

Please join us for this edition of the Columbia University Club Foundation Ambassador Series, in which our special panel of guest ambassadors will speak about the summit, and inform us about the Outcome Document that will be proposed and adopted by the UN General Assembly. They will also provide a focus on how the international community will work to restructure and better organize international migration to work circumstantially within the current realities of global mobility.

Panel Participants

SIMA SAMI BAHOUS, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations
DAVID DONOGHUE, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations
ASHRAF EL NOUR, Permanent Observer of the International Organization for Migration
